Newton

Amit Masurkar's Newton was India's official entry to the 90th Academy Awards. As India gears up for another massive election — with over 800 million voters and 9 million booths — rookie government clerk Newton Kumar is assigned to conduct polls in a remote, conflict-ridden jungle of Central India. Surrounded by Communist guerrillas and cut off from basic amenities, he must ensure a ‘free and fair’ election under extreme conditions.

Through one tense day, Newton confronts the harsh realities of democracy on the ground — where idealism meets cynicism, and doing the right thing comes at a cost. As they say in the jungle, “The more things change, the worse they get.”
